John Amaechi, the 6′9″ former NBA player is set to come out of the closet and give gays kids everywhere a new hero to look up to. The news comes via Sports on My Mind. Amaechi will be the first NBA player to step up as a proud gay man. WNBA superstar, Sheryl Swoopes, came out last year.

Professional male sports has long been considered one of the toughest places for LGBT people to be open and honest about who they are. Amaechi is writes about being in the NBA and how he came to value himself and gain the courage to come out in is new book Man in the Middle.
