Vote Different Creator Revealed

March 21, 2007

The creator of the “Hillary 1984″ ad has been revealed. Phil de Vellis, a former employee at Blue State Digital, created the mash up of the famous Apple 1984 ad and a Hillary Clinton video in his apartment using a Mac and a bit of software. Some folks thought the ad was a right-wing “Swiftboat” attack while others thought it came from inside the Barack Obama campaign. Obama’s campaign was a client of Blue State Digital’s, but no knowledge of who made the ad.

Here is what Phil had to say about the ad:

I made the “Vote Different” ad because I wanted to express my feelings about the Democratic primary, and because I wanted to show that an individual citizen can affect the process. There are thousands of other people who could have made this ad, and I guarantee that more ads like it–by people of all political persuasions–will follow.

This shows that the future of American politics rests in the hands of ordinary citizens.

The ad has been floating around the interweb for a few weeks now and we will see whether or not it opens up a new avenue for attack ads. One thing is clear and that is that the increased us of new media is going to have all of the campaigns on edge.
