GOP Kills CT Youth Voting Bill

May 11, 2007

You would think that Republicans would be all in favor of increasing youth voter participation. And you would be dead wrong. The Connecticut Republican Party banded together to kill a bill that would have given 17 year olds the right to vote in primary elections provided they would be 18 years old by the general election. And they thought that young people would do and say nothing about this betrayal.

They were wrong.

The Connecticut Young Democrats created a smart and funny video using news footage of the vote in the legislature to get the word out about how the Republicans publicly claimed to want to support young people in voting, but when it to the actual vote flip-flopped better than Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton.

Kudos to the CT Young Democrats and their co-president Lon Seidman for taking the electoral bull by the horns and using new media to shed light on the Republicans fighting to deny some youth the power of the vote.

Check out the video.

Much love: Mike Connery of Future Majority for helping to promote this story.
