YouTube Interviews Barack Obama

November 15, 2007

YouTube’s smoking hot politics editor Steve Grove interviews Barack Obama using questions submitted by YouTube users. In the interview, Barack talks about using technology to open up our government and give people new ways to interact with and access information from our government and why its crucial that America engages in a positive way with the rest of the world.

There is a question about marriage for same-sex couples. Quite honestly that’s a question that I think Barack stumbles over. I get that no major presidential candidates supports marriage equality and I don’t expect him jeopardize his campaign over an issue which the president has little say. But, his answer ceding the word “marriage” as a religious concern versus the rights and responsibilities that are connected to marriage does not wash with me. If “marriage” is to be a religious term, then it would only make sense to advocate that all marriage be converted to civil unions with same-sex couples included in that.

There is still far more to support in this interview and in Barack’s campaign than there is to oppose.
